Rimi’s Culinary Technologist, Lina Barchaite, advises those preparing for the season on what foods to take on a picnic or hike, and shares a recipe for sprinkling beans with sun-dried tomatoes.

Every picnic or walk in nature with the family should start with preparation. Culinary technologist of “Rimi” Lina Barchaite recommends storing not only food, but also other tools – everything you need for your free time in the fresh air. For example, sunscreen, bug repellant, blankets, plates, cutlery, napkins and a trash bag to make cleaning up after the picnic easier. In addition, the dishes in which the food is placed should be carefully selected. It is very important to cover them tightly and wrap them carefully.

“For an outdoor picnic, it’s best to prepare containers that are easy to carry and safe to share. Prepare food in individual portions: make sure it’s easy to eat with your hands and doesn’t spoil quickly at outside temperatures. “Sandwiches, fruit and salads, hummus, vegetables, quiches and of course ham, sausage and cheese trays are perfect for picnics,” advises Culinary Technologist Rimi.

In addition to the main dishes, L. Barchate recommends not to forget snacks: nuts, fresh fruit, cookies, bread, lentil chips and other snacks that are convenient to take with you. According to him, an exotic dessert is a fruit salad for a picnic, which you can share with all the participants of the picnic. Fruit salad is easy to eat and prepare, and it’s also a great warm season dessert. However, the culinary technologist also reminds us that not all dishes and desserts are suitable for a picnic.

“Ice cream, cream cakes or cakes are not good choices because they are difficult to look pretty and these desserts are loved by ants, bees and other insects. If you want to bring treats to the picnic, something that won’t melt or stick is best. And if you can eat them with your hands, everything is fine,” advises the specialist.

According to L. Barchaite, one more thing is needed for a good picnic – especially on the hottest days: “It doesn’t matter whether we are preparing a picnic on the beach or planning to spend a day at sea. in nature, cold water and non-alcoholic drinks are necessary, as it is necessary to drink more fluids during a walk or after several hours in the sun. Of course, if the picnic takes place during the coldest months of the year, don’t forget to bring a thermos with hot drinks like tea or coffee.’

A food technologist recommends putting food in woven baskets or cool bags for going out, because neatly arranged products or dishes have no chance of spillage, and the handles do not break under the weight and are much more convenient to carry. .

Beans are spread with sun-dried tomatoes

For the spread you will need:

1 tablespoon of olive oil

1 piece. onion

1 piece. garlic

100 g of sun-dried tomatoes (in jars with oil)

300 g of white canned beans

0.5 pcs. lemons

2.5 tablespoons of parsley

0.25 teaspoons of thyme

60 ml of cold boiled water

salt and freshly ground pepper

Production process:

  1. Fry finely chopped onion in hot oil until it changes color. Then add chopped garlic (2 cloves) and fry for another 30 seconds.
  2. Chop the tomatoes before adding them to the blender.
  3. Squeeze the juice of half a lemon. Mix all the ingredients of the spread with fried onions and garlic and rub until smooth. If necessary, add water (do not pour immediately, adjust according to consistency). Season with salt and pepper and toss well. Tasty!
